H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts
In 1946, Walter “Pug” and Eloise Weil opened the Weil Movie Theatre. It would serve as the primary entertainment center to Greenfield and Hancock County for 26 years. The beautiful art deco building changed hands a few times over the years, but eventually it was purchased by the Strahl family, who owned another theatre in Greenfield. It was converted to a two-screen venue, and operated as the Village Theatre. Its run lasted until 2003 when Mr. and Mrs. Allen Strahl donated the building to the Hancock County Visitors Bureau. A few years later, with the benefit of both public and private funding, a $900,000-plus renovation began. Named for Mrs. Linda Strahl’s father, the H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts is now our premier home for the performing arts in downtown Greenfield. This exciting evolution promises to continue to be one of the cornerstones of our community.
