The Hancock County Visitors Bureau Inc. is charged with promoting the cultural, historical, artistic and commercial amenities of Hancock County, Indiana, for the purpose of increasing tourism, visitation, conventions and participation in various special events for the economic benefit of Hancock County and the enrichment of quality of life issues for visitors and residents alike.
Located in historic Hancock County, the bureau is conscious of the community’s links to the history and development of early Indiana. The county seat, Greenfield, is bisected by the Historic National Road (U.S. 40) and much of its downtown area has been recognized as a National Register Historic District. Greenfield is the site of Hoosier Poet James Whitcomb Riley’s boyhood home and takes much of its character from the influence of Riley’s legacy and the Victorian era in which he lived.
Hancock County, a rapidly growing area, is also home to an active and expanding arts community and is the site of Greenfield’s annual Riley Festival, one of the largest festivals of its kind in Indiana.
The Bureau is actively working to develop and promote additional arts/cultural events and facilities that will enhance the local experience for all who visit or reside in our community.
The Hancock County Visitors Bureau was established in October 2001, and is funded by the County innkeeper’s tax. No general tax dollars support the bureau. A seven-member board was appointed by the Hancock County Council and launched its plans to open an office and begin its task of attracting visitors, enhancing tourism and aiding others in their promotion of Hancock County events and attractions. The Bureau subsequently incorporated as an Indiana nonprofit corporation and has received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status from the Internal Revenue Service.
The Hancock County Visitors Bureau office is located on the second floor of the H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts at 122 W. Main St. in Greenfield, IN. The Board meets on the third Monday of each month at (usually at) 4:00 pm at this location.
